When Sandy Patangay left her home country of India to come to the United States, she never dreamed that she’d one day be able to bring something so special from her native culture to eager New York City consumers. After having completed her masters and begun working on Wall Street, she turned her sights away from the corporate world and began to channel her true passion - henna design - into a project that has become incredibly successful in an incredibly small amount of time. Transmuting traditional henna designs onto a whole new medium, Sandy creates beautiful cakes, cookies, and macaroons that have earned critical praise from some of the most renowned culinary experts. Thinking back on her decision to take this step in establishing her own business, she says:
So many times, I asked myself, whether this was a stupid move — walking away from a secure job to sell cakes. But now I can see I didn’t waste a single day. While I loved what I was doing on Wall Street, there’s only so much you can do to climb the corporate ladder. And how many people actually end up being the CEO? But when you follow your passion, the possibilities are endless.

Star Trails in Australia
Many photographers like to experiment with long exposure photography techniques, but an Australian Lincoln Harrison gives a new definition to the word “long”. The 37-year-old Victorian showcases a portfolio of mesmerizing long exposure star trail photography, with some of his photo shoots taking up to 15 hours. The photos are made at his personal favorite spot over Lake Eppalock, in the Australian outback.
The star swirls are the result of the rotation of the Earth, and makes you think you’re witnessing the stars traveling across the sky. “With no buildings for miles, the sky is so clear and it’s amazing to be able to capture the beauty of the night’s sky on camera,” says Lincoln.

I’m guessing that boobs didn’t work like that in Ancient Egypt
but idk
Maybe they gave helium breast enlargements
Eh, I’d give the ancient Egyptians a break. They had engineering and astronomy down pat, but bless their souls if they didn’t understand perspective, let alone anatomy.

FINALLY, A CHANCE TO USE MY ART HISTORY CLASSES *EYES SPARKLE*
Egyptians actually knew anatomy very well, their style came about because they wanted to represent the human form in the most straightforward way visually possible. They wanted to show each part of human anatomy in a way that it could be visually understood immediately. For example, they always draw faces to the side because then you can see and understand that the nose sticks out— something you cannot really ‘get’ when the face is drawn from the front without a lot of shading. This is why the shoulders are from the front, but legs and, in this case, breasts, are to the side.
The reason they did that, by the way, was because they believed that otherwise the spirit of the person depicted would be left without that body part, or not remember that they had that body part. Pretty unfortunate when the afterlife was supposed to be like an entirely new life.
What’s really interesting is that this rigid representation was only used for people who mattered. If you look at how they drew slaves, you will see much more fluidity of the form, and they look much more natural.
The art minor in me had to make sure you guys saw this, cause look, art history!

this why i love tumblr. I took art history classes and all they talked about was white people
Reason #1 why I chose to go to an HBCU to get my arts education. I would’ve never known about this, Augusta Savage, or SPIRAL otherwise.
Yeah, nobody teaches you crap outside of Europe when it comes to art history.
I’m so thankful that I’ve had art teachers who go beyond convention, and they are the among the most influential people in my life. Bless you professors who gave no fucks about anything other than expanding my perspective.

Hmong Indigo Batik cloth is a practice very old and traditional to the Blue/Green Hmong hill tribes. It’s used to decorate the pleated skirts and other articles of dress. The Blue/Green Hmong created symbols from their surroundings and these symbols are used throughout their batiked cloth. Once the roll of cloth is covered with batik drawing and all the wax has dried, it is dyed in a natural indigo vat, dipped many times to achieve the dark blue coloring. Then the wax resists indigo from penetrating in the areas where the wax has been applied, is removed by boiling the cloth in water. From here, these lengths are dried in the fresh, open air, looped between the drying the lines.

World of the Ring by Jian Guo
Middle-Earth seems like it’s a pretty happening place: plenty of exotic locales to explore, elves handing out gifts, trees to ride when your footses ache, and treasure available only to those courageous enough to take it. If it ever existed in a Tolkien novel or note, then Jian has probably drawn it: his jaw-droppingly resplendent masterpieces tell just as enthralling a story as the novels they emulate… though in considerably fewer words. The lead image: “A Long Adventure with a Hobbit” is available in print form at Jian’s DeviantArt.
